Thick, glossy, dark green leaves appear somewhat scorch resistant and become butter-yellow in autumn. Short internodal lengths create a densely foliaged tree.
Mature bark exfoliates in large, creamy-white sheets. Underbark ages to salmon-brown and cinnamon. Highly ornamental.
Small winged nutlets borne in a pendulous ‘cone’ (strobilus) that sheds in autumn.
Broadly conical to ovate.
Attractive catkins bloom in spring. Male and female flowers are borne separately on the same plant (monoecious).
